Complete DC Comics Superhero Movie Release Calendar

The DCEU continues to expand with Aquaman, Shazam, Wonder Woman 2, New Gods, and more!

The DC Extended Universe is in full swing after the release of theJustice Leaguemovie. Even with that films disappointing box office performance, the DCEU isnt going away anytime soon, and theres still lots to look forward to.

So, its time to take a look at all of the DC superhero movies that will be released over the next few years. And trust us, there are atonof them on the way, and we expect more details will be announced as we go forward. We have all the release dates for every one of em right here, as well as official details, the most interesting rumors, and suggestions for further reading where appropriate. Because of howJustice Leagueunderperformed at the box office, this is likely to shift a bit in the coming year, but you can at least count onAquaman,Wonder Woman 2, andShazamto all arrive on schedule between now and the end of 2019.

Heres how this works, because the schedule is getting a little weird. Were starting with the dates that we know Warner Bros. has reserved specifically for DC superhero movies. Youll find that in some cases, there isnt officially a project attached to that date yet. Then well get into the stuff that we know for 100% certain is in development, but that dont have release dates for. Then well get into some of the long shots at the bottom.

This was formerly the date occupied by theAquamanmovie, but that was bumped to December. Instead, Warner Bros. has given the release date to theTeen Titans Go!animated movie.

While this isnt part of the DCEU (obviously), we promised you all the DC movie releases, and this one counts!

Jason Momoa is playing Aquaman. Theres no doubt that they studio has been taking Aquamanveryseriously, and hes a standout character inJustice League. Amber Heard will also appear as Queen Mera. Patrick Wilson is Ocean Master and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta.

James Wan (Furious 7) directs from a script byWill Beall (Gangster Squad). Expect a big, high adventure style romp.

Lights Outdirector David F. Sandberg is directingShazam, from a script byHenry Gayden and Darren Lemke. Asher Angel will play Billy Batson, Zachary Levi is Shazam, and Mark Strong is the villainous Dr. Sivana.Itstar Jack Dylan Grazer is on board as Freddy Freeman, too!

[related article: Why the Shazam Movie is Important]

This was long ago announced as theJustice League 2release date, but this is no longer the case. At this late stage, its unlikely any DC movie will be able to fill this date. Its possible thatShazamends up moving here,Wonder Woman 2arrives in November, and WB is happy with a two superhero movie year. But dont worry because once we get to November…

The most critically acclaimed DCEU movie is definitely getting a sequel. Patty Jenkins will return to directWonder Woman 2, which will move Dianas story forward in time…to 1984. Expect what might be another adventure set in the past, this time the 1980s. Kristen Wiig will play Wonder Womans enemy, the Cheetah.

Were not quite sure what this one is just yet, but there are a couple of possibilities down below. Could this beMan of Steel 2which is apparently still a possibility at the studio? Probably not, as Warner Bros. would like to leave that for a more traditional blockbuster window release. But it could be a good fit for…

The most likely scenario here, at least for the moment, isSuicide Squad 2, if only because Warner Bros. is making that project a priority and its expected to shoot later this year. David Ayer going to be too busy withGotham City Sirensuntil further notice, though, so Gavin OConnor (The Accountant) is writing and directing this one.

Its also possible that this could end up being David AyersGotham City Sirensmovie, but that seems like a longshot.

Ray Fisher made his first (very brief) appearance as Vic Stone/Cyborg inBatman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and has a crucial role to play inJustice League. At one point he was supposed to feature inThe Flashsolo movie, too, but its not clear if thats still the case.

No other details are presently available, andthere are also rumorsthat this one might be reworked into a movie that would introduce theTeen Titansto the big screen. But also note that there has been no movement on this project in some time, so it might not be the most likely to arrive here. But until we hear otherwise, this is what was announced.

Just like that February date, we dont know what this is, but after you get past our entry onGreen Lantern Corps, well lay out some possibilities. Again, June 2020 could end up being the release date forFlashpoint,Man of Steel 2,The Batman,Gotham City Sirens, or one of the multiple Joker or Harley Quinn projects in the works.

Fairly or unfairly, Green Lantern has the most working against him. The 2011 film failed to kickstart the DC Universe as planned, and received a lukewarm (at best) critical and box-office reception. There are, of course, ways around this.

One way is to simply not make Hal Jordan the central Green Lantern of the movie. Thisone may focus on as many as three Green Lanterns, with the main focus on a kind of buddy/cop movie with John Stewart and Hal Jordan. David Goyer and Justin Rhodes are writing the script, but theres no director in place yet, although Rupert Wyatts name has been linked to the job at one point.

Now, lets get into the projects that are in the works, but dont have release dates yet. Weve grouped these roughly in the order we expect to see them based on how far along they are.

Jonathan Goldstein and Jon Francis Daley are directing this one, from a script by Joby Harold. It will be based on theFlashpointstory from the comics. Or…it might not be.Theres a chance the focus of this one has changed.

Ezra Miller will reprise hisJustice Leaguerole as Barry Allen. Kiersey Clemons is Iris West. Its possible that well get a guest appearance from Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, as well.

Maybe not, though. This movie has had an extraordinary amount of trouble getting off the ground.

Steven Spielberg has long wanted to make a Blackhawk movie, and hes finally going to get his wish. And if it was your wish to see Steven Spielberg direct a DC movie, youre also in luck. David Koepp is writing the screenplay. We have more details on this one here.

Ava DuVernay will direct a movie based on Jack KirbysNew Gods. Its not clear yet whether this will fit into the traditional DCEU, but really, it doesnt need to. The New Gods is a cosmic story of such incredible scale that theres no reason to try and connect this to earthbound concerns.

The New Godsis the story of two worlds, the warlike Apokolips and the peaceful New Genesis, each populated by immensely powerful beings with fantastic technology. Darkseid is the evil dictator of Apokolips, and he swaps sons with Highfather, the leader of New Genesis, and each child is raised on the opposite world. Darkseids son, Orion, becomes a troubled champion of New Genesis, while Highfathers son (raised by Darkseid) revolts and becomes the super escape artist, Mister Miracle. This barely scratches the surface of what this movie is about. We tried to get into more detail about it here.

The Batmansolo movie has Matt Reeves as director but…might not star Ben Affleck. Were not sure what the status of that is at the moment.

Warner Bros. is developing a solo movie forThe Joker, Batmans greatest villain. Todd Phillips (The Hangover,War Dogs) will direct, and co-write a script with Scott Silver (8 Mile,The Fighter). Martin Scorsese is producing. This is to be a Joker origin story, told as a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-80s Gotham City that isnt meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorseses films from that era.

This movie will feature Joaquin Phoenix (not Jared Leto) in the role, and its not completely clear whether or not this will officially tie in with the rest of the DCEU continuity. It sounds like the studio is pursuing a big screen version of DC Comics Elseworlds line.

The Lego Batmanmovie director Chris McKay has been tapped to direct a Nightwing movie. Bill Dubuque (The Accountant) is working on a script. No other details are currently available, and this one doesnt have a release date yet, although there are rumors of a 2019 window.

Joss Whedon was originally supposed to write, direct, and produce theBatgirlmovie, one that was reportedly based on Gail Simones recent New 52 take on the character. He has exited the project and now

This isnt terribly likely at the moment given how the first film underperformed at the box office, but dont count it out yet!We have some ideas about howJustice League 2could still move forward right here.

Shazamdoesnt have a star to play its title character yet, but it sure does have a villain. And that villain, who will be played by Dwayne Johnson, is certainly strong enough to sustain his own movie.

Theres no release date set for theBlack Adammovie, and this is the kind of thing that could work as a nifty prequel to further flesh out the mystical world ofShazamif they choose to go that route. Were currently on the lookout for more info.

Adam Sztykiel (Due Date,Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul) is writing.

Joe Manganiello has been cast as Slade Wilson, known to DC fans as Deathstroke. Long rumored as the villain ofThe Batmansolo movie (that is no longer the case), Deathstroke is now going to get a solo film, written and directed byThe Raids Gareth Evans. At the moment, there is no release date.

Cathy Yan will direct theBirds of Preymovie, from a script by Christina Hodson.Birds of Preymay feature Batgirl, Black Canary, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and others…and there are rumors that the Penguin will feature as the villain.

At one time this was calledDark Universe, until Universal came along and ruined that name with their failed horror movie shared franchise. This one will feature the supernatural characters from the DC Universe. Characters like Swamp Thing, Demon, Deadman, Zatanna, and possibly even John Constantine.

Guillermo del Toro was attached to this one for quite some time, but had to leave the project. Then it was Doug Liman. Now it might be Daniel Espinosa or Gerard Johnstone. This will probably remain slow going.

And now for the long shots…projects mentioned, rumored, or that havent had any movement in a while.

TheresanotherJoker-centric flick in the works this one, a Joker and Harley Quinn movie is absolutely part of the DCEU, and would pick up whereSuicide Squadleft off. There are currently on additional details available on this one, either.

Yes, theres also another Harley Quinn movie in development! Whether this is a solo project or something else remains to be seen. Could this beBirds of Prey? Your guess is as good as ours!

FlashandArrowexecutive producerGreg Berlanti is going to executive produce and possibly direct aBooster Goldmovie. Zack Stentz (Thor,X-Men: First Class) will write the script.

Early reports described this as a superhero buddy cop movie that would involve Blue Beetle. Well get you more updates on this as they become available.

Warner Bros. knows they have one of the biggest stars in the world already in costume, sotheyre reportedly considering aDeadshotsolo movie, as well.

Back on the schedule after years of being dormant, theLobomovie may attempt to be the DCEU equivalent of Deadpool. Jason Fuchs must have impressed Warner Bros. with his work on Wonder Woman, because hes on board to write the script for this one. Michael Bay might direct.

Well update this with more information as we get it, but it should be a fun ride.

Sandmanisnt a superhero movie, so the fact that he wasnt involved in an announcement that primarily focused on high-profile franchises (along with the superhero slate, Warner Bros. focused on Lego movies and Harry Potter spinoffs). It isnt a DC Universe movie that will have any bearing on future Justice League films. But itisone of the most successful, enduring comics of all time.

The latest news on this isnt encouraging, though. It appears to be a dead project.

Perhaps the longest of the long-shots, the Metal Men movie is something thats been in discussion as far back as 2007. Its the most bizarre concept of the bunch, involving a mad scientist and his group of sentient elemental robots, but likeSuicide SquadandLegion of Super-Heroes, perhaps that uniqueness is what makes this one so appealing. Warner Bros. cant be seen to copy the Marvel model too closely, so veering away from solo outings for traditional heroes and into this kind of territory might be the very best thing they can do for the brand.

The Metal Men recently received a New 52 facelift at the hands of writer Geoff Johns, the co-chair of DC Films. If theyre a favorite of DC Entertainments Chief Creative Officer, it would be wrong to count the Metal Men out, even if theres been no public movement on this project in recent memory.

Well keep updating this with new information as we get it!
