Dome Ceilings

The dome ceiling box is the distance of the squared rough opening in-the-clear. You can also think of this as the outer rough opening diameter of your ceiling dome. Enter the box measurement in inches to the nearest 1/8 (.125). For example, if your ceiling dome box is 9-7 5/8, you would enter 115.625. If your box isnt square, then youll either need to make it square or choose either our oval dome ceilings or elongated dome ceilings.

You have the option to add a light ring to your ceiling dome. A light ring is a secondary inner ring. Think of this as a ledge along the inside circumference of the ceiling dome where you can add secondary lighting, such as LED strip lights or rope lighting.

When adding a light ring, the finished drywall opening in your ceiling will be roughly 1 foot smaller than the rough opening box. This is due to the fact that all light rings are framed 6 inches in from the box. So, depending upon the finished size of the circular profile you want when looking up at the ceiling dome, you may want to add 1 foot to the box to offset the 1 foot inset of the light ring.

The style of a dome ceiling is the unique shape of the dome rafters: soft, half-circle, or elliptical. Most of our builders prefer the soft style as it provides the most flexibility in height. When you choose the soft style, we provide you with our suggested height, but you ultimately have the freedom to choose the height you want or are potentially limited to by the pitch of your roof or truss design. In contrast, when you choose either the half-circle or elliptical style, the height is mathematically predetermined given the size of the box and the style youve chosen. Note how the total height changes depending upon your style.

an address or zip code. Location is the specific place in the project your ceiling dome will be installed (for example: Entry, Dining, Master Suite, 1 Dome Ceiling). Location is a helpful, optional field: we will label each dome ceiling kit with the location you provide,

The height of the dome ceiling is the total amount of height youll need in-the-clear. This includes the outer ring, inner ring (if applicable), rafters, and dome tie.

When you choose the soft style, you have the ability to choose your own height. In the below field, we provide our suggested height given the size of your ceiling dome, but we give you the freedom to determine your height based on your design or the limitations you might face by the pitch of your roof or truss design.

You can download our How to Install instructions under the instructions tab of our pricing calculator.  While these are for the soft style dome ceiling kit with light ring as shown in the adjacent video, your installation instructions will be tailored to your style and specifications for easy install.

Drywalling a dome ceiling is comprised of: measuring the curvature of the dome rafters and creating the pie shaped piece that is created from the separation of one rafter from another; measuring the curvature of the outer ring and light ring (if applicable), cutting the drywall to the curvature and length, forming and fastening in place.

Wetting the back of the drywall (as shown in the video) will make the drywall easier to bend.

For tighter radius ceiling domes, consider using a double layer of either ¼ or ¼ flex drywall.

Drywall, plaster, tile, brick veneer, trim, mural, fauxthe list is seemingly endless.  Whether you want your ceiling dome to have a simple or an ornate finish, the choice is yours.  All of our dome ceiling kits can be designed to handle any finish you can imagine.  Plus, they readily accept chandeliers.

While any part of a ceiling dome can be modified to our builders exact specifications, the most common part specifications for the outer ring, light ring, dome rafters and dome tie are as follows:

The outer ring is normally 1 ½ thick and 3 ½ deep (tall) for the half-circle style or 1 ½ thick and 5 ½ deep (tall) for the soft and elliptical style.

The light ring is normally 1 thick and 5 ½ deep (tall).

Depending upon the size and style of the dome ceiling, the thickness of the rafters can vary from 1 1 ½ thick and the depth can vary from 2 2 ½ thick. The quantity of the rafters depends upon the size and will either be 12, 16, 24, 32, or 36.

The dome tie will change in size and shape to adequately account for the quantity and thickness of rafters.

Ceiling domes larger than 18 foot may require an additional supporting ring, called a purlin ring, that sits atop the rafters and ties into the dome tie for added support.

Choosing a style for your dome ceiling is mostly personal taste along with the overall design/theme of the home.  The style of a ceiling dome is the unique shape of the dome rafters: soft, half-circle, or elliptical.
