A decal today is no longer limited to logos, brand signatures, and business names. Most of them now come in every imaginable shape, size, pattern, and design. Theyre available as monograms and may come in tribal designs and many other custom styles like flames, racing stripes, tropical sunset, and even the American flag. These decals can be added onto the hood, windshield, window, or anywhere on the auto body. While many of these were used for business advertising and brand marketing, more and more people are tuning to decals for accessorizing their vehicles. These can change the style or look of the vehicle from plain and bare to sporty, crafty, manly, sophisticated, or rugged. The various designs can be a reflection of personal style or even the interest of the driver or car owner.
Step 1:Keep the surface clean and dry. Wash the car using a special type of cleaner and a sponge, and then rinse it thoroughly. Make sure that you dont leave behind any residue, as this can result in bubbles on the decal that can easily get peeled. Finally, wipe the cars surface dry with chamois or a lint-free cloth.
*Note:Isopropyl alcohol is best used on windows to remove oil.
Step 2:Be sure to polish the car. To keep the surface smooth, an electric buffer may be used for getting rid of scratches and stains. Buff the cars surface in circular motion and do this one small part at a time until the whole car is covered.
*Note:You may use wax and a soft sponge in case you dont have a buffer. Let the wax sit for about 1 to 2 minutes until it dries. Dont leave behind any trace of wax and never use wax on windows, rubber seals, and plastic parts.
Step 3:Lay out the decal on the cars surface and mark this with painters tape. Tape off the decals top portion to easily lift it and remove the backing without any trouble. For large decals, make sure that these wont tear or twist. Youll probably need help with holding them out and positioning them on the car.
*Note:Know where the decal/s should go. Find the best place to add custom or decorative decals. If they come in pair, they should be positioned on the exact same spot on each side of the car.
Step 4:Remove the top edge of the decals backing as you raise it. The adhesive should be pressed flat onto the surface. You then have to remove the backing and then the painters tape. The decal/s should be placed over the auto body cuts.
*Note:When peeling away the backing, this should be done in downward motion. With your hand, gently smooth out the portions of the decal/s that have been applied to the surface.
Step 5:Trim the decal away from the auto body cuts. After trimming it, make sure that the loose parts are tucked underneath the frame. Use a razor knife for this.
*Note:Do it slowly and with a relaxed hand to make sure that the decal wont be accidentally ruined.
Step 6:Use a rubber spatula for smoothing it out. Remove any bubble from the inside all the way out onto the edge.
*Note:Be careful when pressing out the bubbles. If you dont have a spatula, dont use a tool that can easily tear the decal/s.
