Impressions from the opening rounds of the FIA 2017 WEC & ELMS season
StickeredUp4LeMans man on the inside gives his thoughts from the opening rounds of FIA WEC & ELMS at Silverstone
Having spent 6 days last week watching and then officiating at both rounds of the championships at Silverstone, I am very pleased to report that despite the doom and gloom comments made at the end of last season regarding departures and changes, both championships opened their seasons with good, strong races.
Glory, tragedy, despair, happiness, relief, exhaustion. As always, this race had them all, and it took all of the 24 hours to tell the story.
To come just 3 mins and 20 seconds away from their first win, after previously coming second, four times, Toyota must have dreamed they finally had it in the bag, only for it to turn into a nightmare. And one teams nightmare becomes another team surprise, with Porsche completing another lap and with it take the chequered flag of victory…
To celebrate our first Le Mans season as StickeredUp4LeMans along with Fords 50th Anniversary since winning Le Mans with the iconic GT40, our very own super-talented Michael McMenemy is drawing this beautiful image which, when finished, will show the 3 Ford GT40s which crossed the line in 1st, 2nd & 3rd places in June 1966.
Most people know that the worlds greatest race was first run at Le Mans in 1923, organised by the Automobile Club de LOuest
but, do they know where the teams come from and how they gain entry into the main event? For any newcomer to the sport it can be rather daunting so well try to make a little sense of it all
Le Mans 24 hours is a unique event. It is by far the biggest and possibly the most important motorsport event of the year and because of this there is a camaraderie between race-goers like no other. If youve been before you will understand it cant be described and for the majority it is the most exciting week of the year, with some people spending months planning their trip.
The motorsport forums all start buzzing once the official dates have been announced Which campsite are you staying on?, What crossing are you on?, What car are you taking?, Have you got your stickers?
.Stickers??? Surely stickers cant be important? Well actually over the last few years they have become as important as your entrance ticket itself! If you havent stickered up for Le Mans then you will be missing out on a huge part of the experience. When you arrive at the ferry port you will be surrounded by thousands of cars all dressed for the event. If you havent got yours you will feel severely underdressed
